IMO it doesn't really matter that much. I would say just play the Old timeline then the Canon. Keep in mind that a lot of people started with Sengoku and played the older games later. You're fine if you skip Little Princess, Little Vampire, 4.1, and 4.2. For a quick intro to the series I would recommend III-->VI-->Sengoku >POTENTIAL ISSUES Everything seems to work perfectly fine on Windows 10. Apparently Kichikuou may have sound issues; I haven't encountered any. However, I have encountered a no sound issue with some of the games. This is likely due to ny sound setup. I fixed these issues by setting my playback device to the default speakers, then starting the game, and switching my playback device to my normal device.
